High tibial osteotomy for knee realignment

High tibial osteotomy for knee realignment to treat arthritis

Doctor: Robert Rozbruch
Patient: Nicole

Nicole is 24 years old and has post-traumatic arthritis of the right knee. The varus (bowleg) deformity causes excessive stress to pass through the arthritic inside part of the knee. She experiences pain on the inside (medial) part of the knee.

An osteotomy of the proximal tibia was done and an EBI frame was used to graudally realign the leg. The weight bearing stress was shifted to the healthy outside (lateral) side of the knee. The frame allowed for a very precise correction that could be “dialed in.”

The frame was removed at 3 months. Complete healing of the “opening wedge regenerate” is seen with excellent realignment. This will prevent pain and rapid progression of arthritis that would otherwise lead to a need for knee replacement.
