Ankle Arthrodesis (Fusion)
Doctor: S. Robert Rozbruch
Patient: Richard
Pre-Op: Richard is a 43 year old who sustained an ankle fracture after a bad fall.
This was repaired by other doctors, and subsequently the hardware failed and he developed a bone infection. This resulted in complete destruction of his ankle joint.
Post-Op: He needed an ankle fusion and treatment of the bone infection (osteomyelitis). We performed this using the Ilizarov method. At one month he was walking.
Follow Up: At 2 months, he was very active and the bony healing was progressing well.
Follow Up: At 3 months, he was out of the frame and very active. The ankle fusion was healed and the infection was cleared.
Follow Up: Despite the ankle fusion, he has good mobility of his foot and he is without pain.
